AND IN THE SECOND YEAR<\/strong><\/p>\n

OF THE REIGN OF NEBUCHADNEZZAR<\/strong><\/p>\n

NEBUCHADNEZZAR DREAMED DREAMS,<\/strong><\/p>\n

WHEREWITH HIS SPIRIT WAS TROUBLED,<\/strong><\/p>\n

AND HIS SLEEP BRAKE FROM HIM.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then the king commanded to call the magicians,<\/p>\n

and the astrologers,<\/p>\n

and the sorcerers,<\/p>\n

and the Chaldeans,<\/p>\n

for to show the king his dreams.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So they came and stood before the king.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And the king said unto them,<\/p>\n

I have dreamed a dream,<\/p>\n

and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack,<\/p>\n

O king,<\/p>\n

live for ever:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

tell thy servants the dream,<\/p>\n

and we will show the interpretation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The king answered and said to the Chaldeans,<\/p>\n

The thing is gone from me:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

if ye will not make known unto me the dream,<\/p>\n

with the interpretation thereof,<\/p>\n

ye shall be cut in pieces,<\/p>\n

and your houses shall be made a dunghill.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But if ye show the dream,<\/p>\n

and the interpretation thereof,<\/p>\n

ye shall receive of me gifts<\/p>\n

and rewards<\/p>\n

and great honour:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

therefore show me the dream,<\/p>\n

and the interpretation thereof.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They answered again and said,<\/p>\n

Let the king tell his servants the dream,<\/p>\n

and we will show the interpretation of it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The king answered and said,<\/p>\n

I know of certainty that ye would gain the time,<\/p>\n

because ye see the thing is gone from me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But if ye will not make known<\/p>\n

unto me the dream,<\/p>\n

there is but one decree for you:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words<\/p>\n

to speak before me,<\/p>\n

till the time be changed:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

therefore tell me the dream,<\/p>\n

and I shall know<\/p>\n

that ye can show me the interpretation thereof.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Chaldeans answered before the king,<\/p>\n

and said,<\/p>\n

There is not a man upon the earth<\/p>\n

that can show the king’s matter:<\/p>\n

therefore there is no king,<\/p>\n

lord,<\/p>\n

nor ruler,<\/p>\n

that asked such things at any magician,<\/p>\n

or astrologer,<\/p>\n

or Chaldean.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And it is a rare thing that the king requireth,<\/p>\n

and there is none other<\/p>\n

that can show it before the king,<\/p>\n

except the gods,<\/p>\n

whose dwelling is not with flesh.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For this cause the king was angry<\/p>\n

and very furious,<\/p>\n

and commanded to destroy<\/p>\n

all the wise men of Babylon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And the decree went forth<\/p>\n

that the wise men should be slain;<\/p>\n

and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then Daniel answered<\/p>\n

with counsel and wisdom<\/p>\n

to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard,<\/p>\n

which was gone forth<\/p>\n

to slay the wise men of Babylon:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He answered<\/p>\n

and said to Arioch the king’s captain,<\/p>\n

Why is the decree so hasty from the king?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then Daniel went in,<\/p>\n

and desired of the king<\/p>\n

that he would give him time,<\/p>\n

and that he<\/p>\n

would show the king the interpretation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then Daniel went to his house,<\/p>\n

and made the thing known to Hananiah,<\/p>\n

Mishael,<\/p>\n

and Azariah,<\/p>\n

his companions:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That they would desire mercies<\/p>\n

of the God of heaven<\/p>\n

concerning this secret;<\/p>\n

that Daniel and his fellows should not perish<\/p>\n

with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel<\/p>\n

in a night vision.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Daniel answered and said,<\/p>\n

Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever:<\/p>\n

for wisdom and might are his:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And he changeth the times and the seasons:<\/p>\n

he removeth kings,<\/p>\n

and setteth up kings:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

he giveth wisdom unto the wise,<\/p>\n

and knowledge to them that know understanding:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He revealeth the deep and secret things:<\/p>\n

he knoweth what is in the darkness,<\/p>\n

and the light dwelleth with him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I thank thee,<\/p>\n

and praise thee,<\/p>\n

O thou God of my fathers,<\/p>\n

who hast given me wisdom<\/p>\n

and might,<\/p>\n

and hast made known unto me now<\/p>\n

what we desired of thee:<\/p>\n

for thou hast now made known unto us<\/p>\n

the king’s matter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch,<\/p>\n

whom the king had ordained<\/p>\n

to destroy the wise men of Babylon:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

he went and said thus unto him;<\/p>\n

Destroy not the wise men of Babylon:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

bring me in before the king,<\/p>\n

and I will show unto the king the interpretation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then Arioch brought in Daniel<\/p>\n

before the king<\/p>\n

in haste,<\/p>\n

and said thus unto him,<\/p>\n

I have found a man of the captives of Judah,<\/p>\n

that will make known unto the king<\/p>\n

the interpretation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The king answered<\/p>\n

and said to Daniel,<\/p>\n

whose name was Belteshazzar,<\/p>\n

Art thou able to make known unto me<\/p>\n

the dream which I have seen,<\/p>\n

and the interpretation thereof?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Daniel answered<\/p>\n

in the presence of the king,<\/p>\n

and said,<\/p>\n

The secret which the king hath demanded<\/p>\n

cannot the wise men,<\/p>\n

the astrologers,<\/p>\n

the magicians,<\/p>\n

the soothsayers,<\/p>\n

show unto the king;<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But there is a God in heaven<\/p>\n

that revealeth secrets,<\/p>\n

and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar<\/p>\n

what shall be in the latter days.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thy dream,<\/p>\n

and the visions of thy head upon thy bed,<\/p>\n

are these;<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As for thee,<\/p>\n

O king,<\/p>\n

thy thoughts came into thy mind<\/p>\n

upon thy bed,<\/p>\n

what should come to pass hereafter:<\/p>\n

and he that revealeth secrets<\/p>\n

maketh known to thee<\/p>\n

what shall come to pass.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But as for me,<\/p>\n

this secret is not revealed to me<\/p>\n

for any wisdom that I have<\/p>\n

more than any living,<\/p>\n

but for their sakes<\/p>\n

that shall make known the interpretation<\/p>\n

to the king,<\/p>\n

and that thou mightest know<\/p>\n

the thoughts of thy heart.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thou,<\/p>\n

O king,<\/p>\n

sawest,<\/p>\n

and behold a great image.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This great image,<\/p>\n

whose brightness was excellent,<\/p>\n

stood before thee;<\/p>\n

and the form thereof was terrible.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This image’s head was of fine gold,<\/p>\n

his breast and his arms of silver,<\/p>\n

his belly and his thighs of brass,<\/p>\n

his legs of iron,<\/p>\n

his feet part of iron and part of clay.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out<\/em><\/p>\n

without hands<\/em>,<\/p>\n

which smote the image upon his feet<\/p>\n

that were of iron and clay,<\/p>\n

and brake them to pieces.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then was the iron,<\/p>\n

the clay,<\/p>\n

the brass,<\/p>\n

the silver,<\/p>\n

and the gold,<\/p>\n

broken to pieces together,<\/p>\n

and became like the chaff<\/p>\n

of the summer threshingfloors;<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and the wind carried them away,<\/p>\n

that no place was found for them:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and the stone that smote the image<\/em><\/p>\n

became a great mountain,<\/em><\/p>\n

and filled the whole earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is the dream;<\/p>\n

and we will tell the interpretation thereof<\/p>\n

before the king.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thou,<\/p>\n

O king,<\/p>\n

art a king of kings:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

for the God of heaven<\/p>\n

hath given thee a kingdom,<\/p>\n

power,<\/p>\n

and strength,<\/p>\n

and glory.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And wheresoever the children of men dwell,<\/p>\n

the beasts of the field<\/p>\n

and the fowls of the heaven<\/p>\n

hath he given into thine hand,<\/p>\n

and hath made thee ruler over them all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thou art this head of gold.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And after thee shall arise<\/p>\n

another kingdom inferior to thee,<\/p>\n

and another third kingdom of brass,<\/p>\n

which shall bear rule over all the earth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron:<\/p>\n

forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces<\/p>\n

and subdueth all things:<\/p>\n

and as iron that breaketh all these,<\/p>\n

shall it break in pieces<\/p>\n

and bruise.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes,<\/p>\n

part of potters’ clay,<\/p>\n

and part of iron,<\/p>\n

the kingdom shall be divided;<\/p>\n

but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron,<\/p>\n

forasmuch as thou sawest the iron<\/p>\n

mixed with miry clay.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And as the toes of the feet were part of iron,<\/p>\n

and part of clay,<\/p>\n

so the kingdom shall be partly strong,<\/p>\n

and partly broken.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And whereas thou sawest iron<\/p>\n

mixed with miry clay,<\/p>\n

they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men:<\/p>\n

but they shall not cleave one to another,<\/p>\n

even as iron is not mixed with clay.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And in the days of these kings<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

shall the God of heaven<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

set up a kingdom,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

which shall never be destroyed:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

and the kingdom shall not be left to other people,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

but it shall break in pieces<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

and consume all these kingdoms,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

and it shall stand for ever.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Forasmuch as thou sawest<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

that the stone was cut out of the mountain<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

without hands,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

and that it brake in pieces the iron,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

the brass,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

the clay,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

the silver,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

and the gold;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

the great God hath made known to the king<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

what shall come to pass hereafter:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

and the dream is certain,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

and the interpretation thereof sure.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face,<\/p>\n

and worshipped Daniel,<\/p>\n

and commanded that they should offer an oblation<\/p>\n

and sweet odours unto him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The king answered unto Daniel,<\/p>\n

and said,<\/p>\n

Of a truth it is,<\/p>\n

that your God is a God of gods,<\/p>\n

and a Lord of kings,<\/p>\n

and a revealer of secrets,<\/p>\n

seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then the king made Daniel a great man,<\/p>\n

and gave him many great gifts,<\/p>\n

and made him ruler<\/p>\n

over the whole province of Babylon,<\/p>\n

and chief of the governors<\/p>\n

over all the wise men of Babylon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then Daniel requested of the king,<\/p>\n

and he set Shadrach,<\/p>\n

Meshach,<\/p>\n

and Abednego,<\/p>\n

over the affairs of the province of Babylon:<\/p>\n

but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.<\/p>\n
