AND<\/strong><\/p>\n ELKANAH WENT TO RAMAH<\/strong><\/p>\n TO HIS HOUSE.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n And<\/p>\n the child did minister unto the LORD<\/p>\n before Eli the priest.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial;<\/p>\n they knew not the LORD.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And the priests’ custom with the people was,<\/p>\n that,<\/p>\n when any man offered sacrifice,<\/p>\n the priest’s servant came,<\/p>\n while the flesh was in seething,<\/p>\n with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And he struck it into the pan,<\/p>\n or kettle,<\/p>\n or caldron,<\/p>\n or pot;<\/p>\n all that the fleshhook brought up<\/p>\n the priest took for himself.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n So they did in Shiloh<\/p>\n unto all the Israelites that came thither.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Also before they burnt the fat,<\/p>\n the priest’s servant came,<\/p>\n and said to the man that sacrificed,<\/p>\n Give flesh to roast for the priest;<\/p>\n for he will not have sodden flesh of thee,<\/p>\n but raw.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And if any man said unto him,<\/p>\n Let them not fail to burn the fat presently,<\/p>\n and then take as much as thy soul desireth;<\/p>\n then he would answer him,<\/p>\n Nay;<\/p>\n but thou shalt give it me now:<\/p>\n and if not,<\/p>\n I will take it by force.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great<\/p>\n before the LORD:<\/p>\n for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But Samuel ministered before the LORD,<\/p>\n being a child,<\/p>\n girded with a linen ephod.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Moreover his mother made him a little coat,<\/p>\n and brought it to him from year to year,<\/p>\n when she came up with her husband<\/p>\n to offer the yearly sacrifice.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And Eli blessed Elkanah<\/p>\n and his wife,<\/p>\n and said,<\/p>\n The LORD give thee seed of this woman<\/p>\n for the loan which is lent to the LORD.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And they went unto their own home.<\/p>\n And the LORD visited Hannah,<\/p>\n so that she conceived,<\/p>\n and bare three sons<\/p>\n and two daughters.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Now Eli was very old,<\/p>\n and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel;<\/p>\n and how they lay with the women<\/p>\n that assembled at the door of the tabernacle<\/p>\n of the congregation.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And he said unto them,<\/p>\n Why do ye such things?<\/p>\n for I hear of your evil dealings<\/p>\n by all this people.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Nay,<\/p>\n my sons;<\/p>\n for it is no good report that I hear:<\/p>\n ye make the LORD’S people to transgress.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n If one man sin against another,<\/p>\n the judge shall judge him:<\/p>\n but if a man sin against the LORD,<\/p>\n who shall intreat for him?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Notwithstanding they hearkened not<\/p>\n unto the voice of their father,<\/p>\n because the LORD would slay them.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And the child Samuel grew on,<\/p>\n and was in favour both with the LORD,<\/p>\n and also with men.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And there came a man of God unto Eli,<\/p>\n and said unto him,<\/p>\n Thus saith the LORD,<\/p>\n Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father,<\/p>\n when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel<\/p>\n to be my priest,<\/p>\n to offer upon mine altar,<\/p>\n to burn incense,<\/p>\n to wear an ephod before me?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n and did I give unto the house of thy father<\/p>\n all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice<\/p>\n and at mine offering,<\/p>\n which I have commanded in my habitation;<\/p>\n <\/p>\n and honourest thy sons above me,<\/p>\n to make yourselves fat<\/p>\n with the chiefest of all the offerings<\/p>\n of Israel my people?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith,<\/p>\n I said indeed that thy house,<\/p>\n and the house of thy father,<\/p>\n should walk before me for ever:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n but now the LORD saith,<\/p>\n Be it far from me;<\/p>\n for them that honour me I will honour,<\/p>\n and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Behold,<\/p>\n the days come,<\/p>\n that I will cut off thine arm,<\/p>\n and the arm of thy father’s house,<\/p>\n that there shall not be an old man in thine house.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation,<\/p>\n in all the wealth which God shall give Israel:<\/p>\n and there shall not be an old man in thine house<\/p>\n for ever.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And the man of thine,<\/p>\n whom I shall not cut off from mine altar,<\/p>\n shall be to consume thine eyes,<\/p>\n and to grieve thine heart:<\/p>\n and all the increase of thine house<\/p>\n shall die in the flower of their age.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And this shall be a sign unto thee,<\/p>\n that shall come upon thy two sons,<\/p>\n on Hophni<\/p>\n and Phinehas;<\/p>\n in one day they shall die both of them.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And I will raise me up a faithful priest,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n that shall do<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n according to that which is in mine heart<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n and in my mind:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n and I will build him a sure house;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n and he shall walk before mine anointed<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n for ever.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n And it shall come to pass,<\/p>\n that every one that is left in thine house<\/p>\n shall come<\/p>\n and crouch to him<\/p>\n for a piece of silver<\/p>\n and a morsel of bread,<\/p>\n and shall say,<\/p>\n Put me,<\/p>\n I pray thee,<\/p>\n into one of
